Financial Advice

When you are charged with a DUI, or DWI (driving while intoxicated), as they call it in the state of New York, things can get expensive quickly. The court may fine you thousands of dollars, and you may have legal fees to deal with as well. If you are not independently wealthy, generating the money you need to pay for these legal fees may be difficult. If this is the case, here are a few suggestions that you could use to create cash for DUI/DWI attorney expenses.

Liquidate Some Assets

“Fines and sentencing penalties for drinking and driving charges increase according to the severity of the charge,” notes The Law Offices of Thomas D. Trbovich. If, for example, you are facing criminal charges as a result of drinking and driving in western New York, and you would like to hire the most competent DWI lawyer Buffalo has to offer, consider liquidating some of your assets to generate the money you need. You could have a yard sale or garage sale to get rid of some of the household items that you are currently not using. Perhaps you even have a baseball card collection, a vintage jukebox, or something of value to turn into cash. You may also consider selling some of your possessions on auction sites like eBay to bring in the money you need. However, this avenue toward liquidation could be a bit time-consuming – especially if you need the cash quickly.

Payday Loan

Another option you might want to consider to generate cash to cover your expenses for hiring a reputable attorney, is getting a payday loan, if you live in one of the 17 states where it is legal. If you have a job that provides you with a regular, steady income, you should be able to qualify for this type of loan. With a payday loan, you borrow against your future earnings, and then pay back the loan when you get paid next. These loans typically come with high interest rates, but they can give you the money you need quickly.

Home Equity Loan

If you are in need of hiring a Buffalo criminal attorney, one way that you could propagate the money you need is through a home equity loan. With a home equity loan, you’ll be borrowing against the amount of equity that you have accumulated in your home to pay for legal fees. You will then have a monthly payment to the bank or lender for several years. One advantage of using a home equity loan is that the interest you pay on the loan is tax deductible. In order to qualify for a home equity loan, you will need a decent credit score and proof of a regular, steady income.

Additional Expenses

As noted above, if you decided to get behind the wheel and drive after you became intoxicated, you may face bigger charges than just a DUI. If you were involved in an accident that affected the lives or property of other people, you could have additional charges brought against you including leaving the scene of an accident, or manslaughter.

Overall, any combination of DUI charges can lead to hefty legal expenses and other issues that warrant retaining an experienced criminal defense attorney – preferably one who is an expert in DUI cases. If your expenses are large and your income is small, you may even consider all three options above for obtaining the cash you need to pay the fines and fees you have incurred. In the long run, it is in your best interest to have the most competent legal representation you can afford, even if it means selling your personal possessions.
